Give us your job description in 25 words or less. An editor is the “manager” of a comic project. Editors ensure the project reads well, looks good, and makes sense.
Describe a typical workday.
There are no “typical” workdays as an editor. Much of the day’s work is dictating by the work turned in by the staff and/or freelancers. However, more than half the day is spent reading; either scripts, plots or dialogue, always with pencil in hand. The other portion of the day is spent editing art; mainly watching for continuity and storytelling.
What led you to realize that you wanted to do this type of work? I produced my own comic in high school and realized it was a LOT of fun. I thought it would be great to do this and get paid for it!
Did you have any heroes or mentors in your industry that you admired? Stan Lee, the premier founder of Marvel Comics and the creator or co-creator of many of their classic heroes.
What type of education or training was required to land your job? It varies from company to company; however, I have a B.S. in Creative Writing and a M.A. in English.
What do you love most about your job? Being able to read so many cool stories, and being a part of making them even cooler.
What one part of your job do you wish you could hire someone else to do? Reading the slush pile.
What advice would you give to teenagers wanting to get into your field of work? Read, read, read. Seriously. Read. It helps to know some grammar, too.
How does your job allow you to use your God-given gifts? People seek entertainment. I think it is incredible if we can give them entertainment, but also reveals truths about God and his forgiving love while we entertain them.
