Give us your job description in 25 words or less. I’m a film/TV actor who also does Voice Over work. I’ve worked most jobs on a set over my career and just love being on set.

Describe a typical workday. The fun of being an actor is that there really is no typical day. I can have my day planned, but then I will get VO auditions or a film/TV audition that I have to tape right away. Part of my day is built in script reading over and over.

What led you to realize that you wanted to do this type of work? My older sister was a professional ventriloquist and I followed her to TV shows and also acting school when I was a boy in Chicago. I ended up growing up on stage and attending acting school at the Goodman Theater.

Did you have any heroes or mentors in your industry that you admired? Everyone in this career has mentors or help from friends. I owe my career to so many people. My parents are the first to thank for encouraging me to act. My high school teacher, Pat Quinn….my first acting on camera acting coach, Jim Bressi…my current acting coach, Eric Kline. Some stars I’ve had the opportunity to act and become friends with are Tom Lester, who played “Eb” on Green Acres and Tim Conway, who gave some great advice that he never wanted to act in any project that he’d have to apologize for later in life.

What type of education or training was required to land your job? No one ever “arrives” in acting I don’t believe. There is always something you can improve on so I take many workshops every year. I have a BA in Interpretative Speech that has helped me a great deal.

What do you love most about your job? I love showing up on set and meeting all the new people who include the crew and other actors. The actual “takes” is where the fun is for me.

What one part of your job do you wish you could hire someone else to do? I really need help keeping track of all my expenses and tax info!!!!!

What advice would you give to teenagers wanting to get into your field of work? I was given advice many years ago that if I wanted to be a good actor I needed to experience life and all it has to give. You need that because you will need to draw on those specific emotions some day on set. Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

How does your job allow you to use your God-given gifts? By being an actor/VO, my voice and my characters I’ve developed have been seen all over the world. That is why I am very picky as to what I act in. God gave me any talent I have and He controls my career and because the entertainment industry has so much influence on everyday life, I really want to do projects that are going to inspire and help people not inspire them to do evil.

Do you have any hobbies or off-hours pursuits that teenagers would find of interest? When I was 16 years old I was a professional skateboarder and still enjoy going to a skatepark when I’m not under contract for a film. I don’t have many “off-hours” these days but I wish I did.

Gary,
The greatest thing that a teacher can ever say about a former student is "I am proud of you." Great interview.
