PDF | Print | E-mail

Name, Age, and State:
My name is Joshua Fryc, and I am 19 years old. I grew up all over the world and the United States. My father is in the Army and moved around every couple of years.

Job-title: I am currently a student/cadet at West Point.

Give us your job description in 25 words or less. Study, study and more study!

Describe a typical workday. I go to class, do my homework and workout.

What led you to realize that you wanted to do this type of work? I have always wanted to be in the military and when I heard about West Point I realized that was what I wanted to do. My grandfather and my dad exposed it to me and from then on it just seemed like it was the place for me to go.

Did you have any heroes or mentors in your industry that you admired? For writing: I have always been a big fan of Tolkien, C.S.Lewis and Christopher Paolini. I have read their books many times and am a huge fan! They inspired me to create my own story and share it with the world. For the military: My father has been in the military for a long time and he certainly inspired me to join. West Point has a great reputation for excellence so I decided that would be the best way for me to go.

What type of education or training was required to land your job? Good grades and SAT scores help, as well as physical and leadership qualities.

What do you love most about your job? I love being around other individuals who are highly motivated. I also love the awesome military and academic opportunities I get that I would not get from other colleges.

What one part of your job do you wish you could hire someone else to do? My math homework!

What advice would you give to teenagers wanting to get into your field of work? Do well in high school, don’t shirk your studies, they will pay off. Get involved with a team, it does not matter what sport, pick one that interests you. Get active and stay fit.

How does your job allow you to use your God-given gifts? I am able to push myself and compete with a lot of other great young men and women. I am also forced to work hard and not rest on my past accomplishments.

Do you have any hobbies or off-hours pursuits that teenagers would find of interest? I love reading and writing! I like to relax on the weekends and do outdoor activities, rock climbing, swimming and other fun things. I enjoy playing soccer and pretty much any sport, but I also like playing board games and video games with my friends.

What did you write? Are you published and where can we get your work?
I have enjoyed writing short stories and fiction ever since I was 12 or 13. As I grew older I decided that I would like to turn one of those short stories into a book. So when I was fifteen I started to work on one story and one story only. At the time I did not know what I would call it or really what it was going to be about. I did know I wanted to write fantasy, because my favorite books have always been Lord of the Rings. I also wanted to write something that would encourage people of all ages to read. So after a couple of years of writing and working with an editor I ended up getting published. The Dragon Knights: Rebirth is available now on the following websites.
