Job-title: Writer, Advertising & Media Promotions
Give us your job description in 25 words or less. I write arts and entertainment articles, report local news for our Christian newspaper and handle promotion and advertising for our concert and events website.
Describe a typical workday. I begin the day by checking my work email account, update events using HootSuite for media feeds, and add event submissions to our website. Depending on the day, I am either working from home checking local news, writing articles for our newspaper and making calls, or out in the community networking to promote our site while offering online advertising and web design options to local Christ-centered businesses and artists.
What led you to realize that you wanted to do this type of work? I have always enjoyed building community and have a strong appreciation for the arts. In the past, writing and being “techy” was something that came natural to me yet I failed to see these as career paths. I focused on social work as a career while writing poetry and learning computer skills was more of a hobby. I am now more fulfilled because my present job allows me to share my creative side in a way that may still be of service to others. It's a win-win.
Did you have any heroes or mentors in your industry that you admired? Absolutely! Many of my closest friends are writers and web designers. They continue to challenge me and lead the way. I also enjoy reading blogs and attending workshops taught by those in the field.
What type of education or training was required to land your job? I would suggest studying journalism, web design, and/or marketing. I studied psychology as an undergrad then studied social work in graduate school. I have had many great hands-on work and volunteer experiences that have given my resume extra weight. I am now using online tutorials and educational books to learn what I need to succeed in web design.
What do you love most about your job? I love working for a Christian company that inspires others on their walk with the Lord. I love that I am challenged and that I am not doing the exact same thing day after day. My job is colorful!
What one part of your job do you wish you could hire someone else to do? Perhaps I could hire someone to bounce ideas back and forth?
What advice would you give to teenagers wanting to get into your field of work? Listen and learn from those with experience in the field. Start small and set goals for yourself. Keep up with current media trends and societal interests as they are always evolving. Discover your niche- what inspires you the most or feels the most natural? Do you have a blog or a website? Pray for guidance and remain grateful for all opportunities. Accept constructive feedback- it's a good thing! Lastly, always believe in yourself (God does).
How does your job allow you to use your God-given gifts? I am able to encourage others and share Him through my writing. I am able to meet people in the community and share His love.
Do you have any hobbies or off-hours pursuits that teenagers would find of interest? Spoken word, photography, web design, traveling, dancing and live music.
