Job-title: Recording Artist / Songwriter / Producer
Web/blog site URL: http://www.tommeeprofitt.com
Give us your job description in 25 words or less. I write songs down in Nashville with other songwriters, and also record original songs and tour the country with my band. I also own a home studio and produce other artists / bands.
Describe a typical workday. It’s ALWAYS different, which is why I love this job so much. One day may be 18 hours of driving, while the next is leading worship in the morning and at night, or doing a concert, and setting up music equipment… while other days I may just have off and get to spend with family!
What led you to realize that you wanted to do this type of work? I was super young (8 years old) and saw a concert on TV and knew that I wanted to do that with my life.
Did you have any heroes or mentors in your industry that you admired? Michael w smith, chris tomlin,
What type of education or training was required to land your job? I play by ear and was able to get A LOT of experience early on (young) but I also pursued a Bachelor’s in Music and Worship Media and Audio Production from Grace Bible College in Grand Rapids, MI.
What do you love most about your job? I love that I get to serve God with gifts that He’s given to me and I love doing that more than anything else! It’s the best feeling in the world when you know you’re where God has called you, and to LOVE what you do for a living. There’s no better feeling.
What one part of your job do you wish you could hire someone else to do? Haha, easy! Tear down and set up. Driving to gigs, and unloading the trailer, and setting up is exhausting… then you have to have energy to do the actual show! Then when you’re done and wiped out… you have to tear everything down, load the trailer back up, and drive again. This is the part of this job that most people don’t see or think about. But it’s so much fun during that it makes it worth it!
What advice would you give to teenagers wanting to get into your field of work? It’s gotta be your #1 passion and #1 love or else you will get burnt out and tired and not want to do it anymore. It requires SO MUCH MORE than most people think. It’s so hard, and such hard work to stay in front of people in a positive light that they continue to listen to your music album after album. It requires TONS of time. You have to pour your entire life into it… or it won’t happen!
How does your job allow you to use your God-given gifts? The thing I was created to do is write songs and lead people in worship. It’s amazing to see Him work through that, and I know that if it’s not for Him moving, I wouldn’t be able to do anything and it would be pointless. He gives us gifts to use for Him, not for ourselves. It takes daily discipline to keep it about that!
Do you have any hobbies or off-hours pursuits that teenagers would find of interest? I love editing videos, which most people know about. www.youtube.com/tommeeprofitt I have about 120+ videos… some involve funny music videos, or worship videos, or short film movies, or stunts, or something crazy or funny. I have a passion for making videos and have since I was 10 years old.
