Comic Characters Fight to End Human Trafficking
Virtuous of Faith Walker Fame Joins The Fight Against Human Trafficking
January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Open Sky Creations is helping to support the cause. To participate, we joined the Comic Creators for Freedom– a group of over 100 comicbook creators who volunteered their artistic talents to raise money and awareness for this cause. You may not know it, but there are currently 27 million enslaved people worldwide- more than double the number of enslaved Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children every year are sold into slavery, most of it sexual. The US Department of Justice estimates 16,000 victims of human trafficking are brought into the United States every year. Unlike slavery in the past, what is happening today is happening in secret. It won’t end until awareness is raised, and people like you and me take a stand.

Susan K. Leigh, author of the God, I Need to Talk to You series, has moved into a new medium with the graphic novel Luther: Echoes of the Hammer. She and her publisher, Concordia Publishing House, noticed there were not many Martin Luther biographies for younger readers, especially, as Leigh puts it, “for a reader not drawn to reading. We developed this to stimulate interest in Luther and to appeal to the non-reader.” The title refers to the hammer Luther used to nail his 95 theses, and how the repercussions of that act still resonate today. The book uses comics, mini-biographies, and historical notes to present an historically accurate portrait of Luther and his times. Illustrated by Dave Hill.

The Gideon Media Arts Conference and Film Festival for 2011 was, once again, an amazing experience! My wife, Deb, and I have been fortunate enough to attend all four Gideon conferences, and every year the Lord has used the Gideon to encourage us as we attempt to use the gifts and talents the Lord has given us, for Him and His Kingdom.
Admittedly, those are high sounding words. But what does that really mean?

With the new Transformers 3 movie coming out at the beginning of July, Literature Ministries International (LMI) in Texas USA is reminding everyone that their 25-packs of Betrayed! mini-comics "are still a good deal for oversize, full-color tracts." This short story about "transforming robots," written by comics professional Ben Avery, "vividly illustrates Christ's sacrifice through the hero's willing death for a disloyal subject." Finished illustrations are provided by Jonathan Koelsch, who also designed LMI's Escape the Trap! booklet. Copies of Betrayed! have been given out in movie theater parking lots during the opening weeks of previous Transformers films. Pastors and youth groups wishing to distribute the tracts locally may order them online.
