Christian Comic Books at Comic Con International

By Ralph Ellis Miley

Another year, another Comic Con. Once again there are the elaborate booths and displays, the massive crowds, the famous celebrities, and the amazing costumes. Kevin and Heather Yong and I drove to convention center early Wednesday morning to set up. Set up went smoothly with the CCAS material arriving to our table in a timely fashion. Though the length of the table was the same as last year, the width was notably shorter, giving us a smaller area to display. And the price will increase next year for the same table area. With the smaller table, this made things a little cramped with our neighbors.

Clash Creative was privileged to produce a 28-page graphic novella for The Voice of the Martyrs entitled, "Hope Amid Horror." Written by Ben Avery (ArmorQuest on Clash), and beautifully illustrated by Rob Woodrum, with a cover painting by Douglas Klauba, this comic is a powerful, redemptive story that shows what one family faced in indonesia in the years 2000-2001.

"We are so blessed to be able to work on a project like this," said Clash President, Ken Raney. "The Voice of the Martyrs is such a wonderful ministry to the persecuted church world-wide and they wanted to produce a book that illustrates this persecution and that can be used to encourage those facing persecution by showing them that they are not alone. This has been a powerful experience for our whole team. Each of them has expressed to me the honor they felt to be involved with this book."

DC Comics has launched a new digital comics program, and now the big 3: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are digital.

Today, the publisher is launching a new, multi-platform digital program that will include much of its back catalog and, surprisingly, one brand new bi-weekly title, Justice League: Generation Lost. DC is also actively working with comics’ retailers to launch an affiliate program that allows physical comic book stores to profit from the sale of digital comics.

Snokie, a new online entertainment company aimed at tween, teen, and young adult Christian readers, has just released Hits & Misses written by veteran comics scribe Kathleen Webb. Hits & Misses is a 480-page graphic novel about a girls fast pitch softball team at a Christian school. It's the first new project for Snokie, a venture established by Buzz Dixon, known for creating Serenity, the popular Christian manga-style series. "It was a LOT of fun to write," says Webb. "Buzz had created some really fun characters, and I got to add some to the mix. I really enjoyed working on it." Snokie titles are sold exclusively online through Amazon as both POD volumes and Kindle downloads. "Since Amazon has created an iPhone app for the Kindle, we expect a lot of sales to iPhone, iPad, and similar devices," reports Dixon.

After some delays, May 13 is the scheduled release date for the new Chasing the Dragon graphic novel. This manga-style book is the latest version of the bestseller about Jackie Pullinger, a Protestant missionary who worked within the infamous Walled City in Hong Kong. Her story has been adapted into comics format by UK scriptwriter Chris Spencer and Toto Winarno, an Indonesian comics illustrator. The project was developed by the Edge Group UK which has been instrumental in previous Christian comics productions such as Behold 3-D, The Graphic Bible, and YUN: The Illustrated Story of the Heavenly Man.
