James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.

John 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Some time ago I joined the rest of civilization and signed up for a Facebook account. I’ve always considered myself pretty web and computer savvy—having worked in publishing, web design, and communication for most of my career.

Genesis 12:10-13:4 (see complete scripture below)

If you and Abraham were in Heaven, relaxing over a sweet tea in rocking chairs (I know Heaven isn’t like Cracker Barrel, but that’s the best I can do right now), I think he would tell you that his little weekend trip to Egypt was one of the dumbest moves he made.

Philippians 3:13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead...

Was 2011 a good year for you? Maybe it was, but maybe it wasn’t. Maybe 2011 was a year filled with poor choices or unfortunate circumstances.

Romans 13:11-12 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

So, it’s 2012 and another year has passed and another year is before you. New Year’s is a great time to evaluate your life, to highlight areas of maturity and to be honest about bad habits you have formed.

For some of us, 2011 was a banner year, a year of triumph and achievement and growth.

For others, 2011 was a year we’d just as soon forget, a year of loss and failure and sorrow.

Regardless of how your 2011 went, here’s something you need to know: God’s love for you at the end of 2011 is the same as it was at the beginning of the year.

Luke 2:8-11 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

Do you believe in Christmas?

That’s the question at the core of almost every Christmas movie. I should know because I think I’ve seen just about all of them. There is a reason some of the classic movies of all time are movies that capture the spirit of this December holiday.

1 Peter 3:1-2 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

Most people agreed with me that its really foolish to engage in a dating relationship with an unbeliever, because a relationship could lead to marriage, compromise the believing partner’s faith, and ultimately lead to marital strife. I feel the Bible is pretty clear on this subject. However, I want to continue the discussion by talking of God’s grace.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

If anyone knew what thanksgiving meant, it was the first hardy souls who stepped onto American soil. Those first few years in the New World were brutal. Harsh winters and a lack of food saw many men, women, and children perish. On the surface, there was nothing to be thankful for.

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

There are a lot of prayers we aren’t sure God wants to answer. For instance, right now our family is praying that we might sell our house and find one a bit bigger and closer to our church. We’re pretty sure this is a good thing, something that would help our family, but it very well could be that God has another, better plan.

2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

Amos 3:3 Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?

Have you ever tried to paddle a canoe or a boat with someone who just doesn’t know what they are doing or is trying to go somewhere different than you? Nothing is more frustrating, is it? You both work furiously, but only go in circles in the water. You may actually tip over.

1 Kings 11:4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

I remember the feeling. I was in high-school and like all teenage guys I was definitely looking for a girlfriend. Of course I said all the right things, “I’m just here to serve God. I don’t want a girlfriend. I’m trusting that God will provide me one in his timing.”

2 Timothy 1:5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Tim lived in a home with a mom and grandma who believed God and took him to church. But Tim’s Dad was not a believer. Tim also lived in a culture that really mocked the Christian faith.

Most people would say that this is a recipe for failure. Broken homes or divided homes usually lead to trouble for teens.

James 4:14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

What is your life? This is the penetrating question asked by the book of James. It’s the question posed to all who claim to follow Jesus. It’s a question few of us take the time to ponder.

1 Samuel 17:38-39  38 Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.

“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off.

When David went up against Goliath, he went up against all earthly odds. You know this—because you’ve heard this story since you were in preschool. Even people who don’t believe the Bible like the quote the David and Goliath story.

What is important and often lost in this epic battle is how David fought. Its interesting that David came to Goliath with a measly slingshot and five rocks.

Genesis 50:20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

Everyone has a story. I have a story. You have a story. And chances are, there are large dark spots in your story, like there are in mine, places where someone we loved disappointed us, even took advantage of us. I’ve been fortune to have grown up in a loving, wonderful household. I was blessed with two parents who loved the Lord and raised with me with love and grace.

Ephesians 5:22-30 (see complete text below)

If you are reading this devotional, then I’m guessing you go to church. I’m guessing you’re wondering why it is that your parents drag you out of bed on a perfectly good Sunday morning and make you put on a nice pair of pants and a shirt. Some of your parents may even make you wear a tie. Yikes!

You probably think, What is the big deal about church? Why can’t I just read my Bible at home?

And God had not spoken to Israel in 400 years.
