Review: "Quarrel" - Xbox 360

Every so often there is a game that comes in that takes us by storm. Every so often there is a game that becomes all the rage here at Family Friendly Gaming. Every so often a game comes along that grabs us and will not let go. Quarrel is one of those games. Quarrel is that every so often. Family Friendly Gaming was blessed with a download code for this game on the Xbox 360.

Quarrel is part board strategy domination, and part Scrabble. Players have territories and troops on maps. Attack a neighboring territory for a chance to take it. Players do not roll dice to decide who wins. They have to make a word. How many troops you have dictates how many characters you have. The characters are who holds up the letters. So if you have four troops you can spell four letter words. All of this based on the combination of random letters you are provided.

Like Scrabble, the letters in Quarrel have different point values. The goal of spelling is to find the highest point value to win the battle. Just make sure it is a real word. Quarrel does not have a timer, so players can take as long as they need to - to try and find the best combination for that particular situation.

When a player wins their characters will throw their letter tiles at the opponents characters. They get angel wings and halos. They will fly off the screen. If you are defending against an attack and win, then the aggressor will have one left. If you are attacking and win, they lose all of their characters in that space on the map. This is the fantasy violence the ESRB found.

Quarrel looks great. The graphics are very high quality, and very colorful. The music in Quarrel is fun, fresh, and very upbeat. I found myself really getting into the visuals and audio of Quarrel. Players can compete against family members or play against the computer. The price of Quarrel is very reasonable in my opinion.

After both sides of a battle present their words, Quarrel will offer a couple of suggestions for next time. These words are generally longer than what the player selects. The learning aspect of Quarrel is fantastic. I love how the battles were turned into a learning experience. I hope to see sequels to this franchise in the future. It was a real joy to be allowed to play and review Quarrel.

There are some modes in Quarrel that are timed. Which means certain modes only give the player a certain amount of time to make a word.
