Review: "Non Flying Soldiers" - iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad

At Family Friendly Gaming we routinely receive games before they are provided to the public. Which can be a very exciting thing. Non Flying Soldiers is one such game we were provided early thanks to our friends over at Chillingo. Here is the deal, we had no idea what this game was about. As I turned it on and watched a World War II style of presentation (done with birds), I wondered what this game was going to be like.
It has been some time since I played a mechanical puzzle game. That is in essence what Non Flying Soldiers is. We place objects to guide the birds over, around, and through the obstacles. The goal of every level is to collect all the items and get the birds safely to the end of the level. Non Flying Soldiers starts easy, but gets progressively more difficult.
The presentation of Non Flying Soldiers has some crude humor. An example would be a bird hopping on a lit bomb and pecking it. The next thing is actually predictable - a large explosion. The birds and the levels look much better than the presentation, mainly because of the invention of color. Non Flying Soldiers has that older feel to it, but not in terms of the content. There is some violence as your birds can die, and in the arcade shooter mini game.
I found myself chuckling at a few parts of Non Flying Soldiers. Mainly because I am ex-military, and can relate to the concepts in Non Flying Soldiers. There are multiple ways levels can be solved in Non Flying Soldiers. It is really up to the player to explore the various options and find the best one that works for them.
I learned to think about where I was placing objects to help my birds make it to the end of the levels. I appreciate the hints in Non Flying Soldiers. If a player is overwhelmed by a level they can use the hints to give them a hand up. I like the concept of Non Flying Soldiers, and hope there are updates in the future. This app stands apart as definitely something different. Are you up for saving some Non Flying Soldiers?
