Review: "Solar Warfare" - iPhone/iPod Touch

Solar Warfare pays its respects to fast games. In some ways Solar Warfare feels like a PC game. In other ways it reminds me of Star Fox. This iPhone/iPod Touch hand held video game is a shooter. Let me explain that classifications for our readers who are not familiar with it.
A shooter is a game where the player has something - usually some form of a flying ship, where we shoot everything in sight. Our goal is to destroy all of the enemy vehicles. Whether they are on the land, air, or sea. At the end of the levels in Solar Warfare we fight a boss vehicle. Defeat it and the level is completed.
Levels in Solar Warfare are long. They are not very conducive to a hand held video game. This is one area where Solar Warfare feels more like a PC game. The graphics are another area. Many of them are amazing looking on this platform. The style of them brings me right back to the Personal Computer.
The music in Solar Warfare is wonderful. From the menu screens, to the battle screens. I enjoyed exploring these planets and murdering all of its inhabitants that I could find. Although I am still not clear why I was flying around blowing up all these different planets defenses.
The controls are generally very good in Solar Warfare. We move our devices around to fly in different directions. We shoot by tapping the right side of the screen, and hover by tapping the left side. The bottom right has missiles we can launch, and the bottom right is a boost. Those two buttons were not always working for me. Sometimes I got a boost instead of a hover. This was mildly frustrating, and point to the design.
Families need to be aware of the violent nature in Solar Warfare. We blow things up by shooting them. We get them before they get us, and we keep getting them. For a shooter Solar Warfare is actually pretty easy. Shooters are known to be insanely difficult. So I like that Solar Warfare is not pull your hair out frustrating.
