Review: "Warlords" - PS3/Xbox 360

What was once old has been made new again. That line came to my mind when I was granted the privilege of playing and reviewing Warlords on the Playstation 3. Atari brought back this old franchise to modern day specs - for a downloaded game. Players must protect their castle.

Players control a shield in front of their castles. A dragon flies over and drops a fireball. The combatants will bounce the fireball(s) back and forth trying to knock down the others castle walls. Once there is a breach, then the goal is to get a ball back into that area to take the castle completely down.

The classic four player battles are alive and well in Warlords. There are also one on one battles which I like better. Especially when there are four balls bouncing all around. So much is going on at once that it can get confusing. I just hoped and prayed that I came out on top.

There are a variety of strategies players will employ in Warlords. Protect only a damaged area, go on the attack, bounce it off the walls to bank it in, use power ups, and more. Some of the power ups will damage the other player. Some examples are reversing the shield direction, and slowing the shield down.

Explosions of light and color are present and accounted for in Warlords. I am amazed at how much damage some of these castles can take. This extended the life of the levels. Which is good since Warlords is a little light on them. Warlords will really shine in the multi-player sections. Which can be done locally or online.

Warlords is priced reasonably in my opinion. The guttural voices gave Warlords a medieval feel. If your family can enjoy some friendly competition then Warlords may be a game for them. If competitions turn into real world fights you might want to look elsewhere.
