Review: "2016: Obama’s America"

Reviewer: Mary Draughon for Previewonline.com

Perhaps the most surprising commercial movie success story this year will be “2016: Obama’s America,” a documentary co-directed and narrated by its author, conservative commentator and writer D’Souza Dinesh. The film has broken box office records for a documentary and has been among the top ten since it opened in early August. This momentum at the box office may or may not continue through the fall.

Dinesh, a native of India, is president of The King College in New York, and has done much research on Obama. Dinesh travels to Hawaii, Indonesia, and Africa interviewing Obama’s family members, classmates and former neighbors to substantiate facts about our President’s very unusual, cloudy background. The film also includes newspaper and TV clips of Obama and his rise to power.

At the core of Obama’s presidency, the filmmaker believes, is his obsession with fulfilling his father’s dream as expressed in his book, “Dreams From My Father,” published earlier this year? Ironically, Obama never met his father, a known Marxist and Socialist, until he was ten years old, and then for only a few months.

The tagline for “2016: Obama’s America” is “Love him or hate him, you don’t know him.” The question is does the public want to know Obama because that might alter their belief that he is the right leader of our country? To this reviewer's knowledge, there has been no publicity that disputes the content of this film. It will be interesting to see if the Obama campaign attempts to prove it inaccurate and misleading or just ignore it altogether.

Although “2016: Obama’s America” is rated PG, it will neither appeal to nor be appropriate for young children.

PG (for mature content, but no harsh or profane language).
