Review: "Ice Age: Continental Drift"

Reviewer: Mary Draughon for Previewonline.com

Forget what you learned in school about the Ice Age and how all that ice became mountains, meadows, farmland and beautiful rivers and lakes. As in the first three “Ice Age” animated films, Scrat the squirrel, is still chasing a runaway acorn and should receive all the credit or blame, depending on your personal outlook.

Review: "The Dark Knight Rises"

Film And DVD Reviews by Phil Boatwright

Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levett. Warner Bros. Written by Christopher Nolan, Jonathan Nolan, David S. Goyer. Directed by Christopher Nolan. 7/20/12

FILM SYNOPSIS: At the outset, Bruce Wayne has become a broken-down recluse, his Batman alter ego a shunned figure hunted by the police, and Gotham city now thriving, but on a political lie. It’s Harvey Dent who was the city’s savor, not the Batman, or so some would have us believe. Then, there’s Bane, a malevolent guy known by one name, like Hitler and Cher, a mad terrorist with a Star Wars-like face mask, which causes his voice to reverberate in a manner that would make James Earl Jones envious. Bane has escaped from prison to wreak havoc over Gotham. He convinces the population (not by increased taxes or incomprehensible legislative bills) that he wants to give the city back to the people, making all citizens equal. With an army of fellow escaped convicts, Bane, who breaks the necks of friends and foes with the same nonchalance, secretly plans to annihilate the city. And who is this pretty, long-legged party guest who has just stolen Bruce’s dead mom’s pearls? Why, Catwoman, of course.

Who Do You Hope To See In Heaven?

By Phil Boatwright

Besides friends, family, and foes, you would expect a film-buff Christian to be looking for movie stars amid the celestial saved, right? And I admit, I’m hoping for John Wayne and Elvis to also be there along with Abe Lincoln and Peter, Paul and Mary (the apostles and Jesus’ mother, not the singing group, although good luck to them too). There’s, of course, another celeb I’m hoping for. I won’t mention his name as I don’t want to sound judgmental, but though an unabashed fan, I’ve read a lot about him that would suggest he did it too much his way.

Review: "The Amazing Spider-Man"

Review by Robert Lucas

Can Spider make sense?

In a year when The Avengers broke almost every box office record ever, and Christopher Nolan has chosen to end a legend, it's only fitting that the original web slinging hero himself, Spider-Man's franchise should start again now. But I suppose the real question is, how tangled is the web it weaves?

Review: "The Amazing Spider-Man"

Review by Paeter Frandsen

I'm a big comic book nerd. I loved the original Spider-Man trilogy (even most of the third one) and own almost all of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic books in either trade paperback or single issue format. When I heard Sam Raimi and company were done making their Spider-Man flicks, I figured the property would eventually be re-launched. But I didn't think it would happen so soon. And even though the trailers I saw looked very promising, I sat down to watch The Amazing Spider-Man ready to be disappointed, but still hopeful.

In 2008, comedian/atheist Bill Maher made the documentary Religulous (http://www.previewonline.org/rev.php3?3350), in which he proclaimed, “Religion must die so mankind can live.” The film continuously crops up on cable, declaring to a new batch of viewers with each airing that all faith is faulty. As I passed a recent rebroadcast of Maher’s film, I was reminded of its draconian nature. But I had to admit, from a secular perspective it can be argued that the Creation is impossible.
